Equine portrait photography is its own discipline — one that depends on understanding horses, how to hold their attention, and how to light horses of different colours. Getting a genuinely good equine portrait comes down to anticipation, patience, and knowing when to wait rather than push for a shot.
I’ve photographed a number of Britain’s leading riders, including Ben Maher, Ros Canter, Carl Hester, Oliver Townend, Michael Whitaker, Zara Tindall, Piggy French, Tom Jackson, Tom Strawson, Willa Newton and Eliza Stoddart, among many others. The same approach applies whether you’re a professional rider needing imagery for sponsors and press, or you simply want a lovely portrait of a horse you love.
I can supply professional studio flash, mains or battery-powered, along with reflectors and backgrounds, or work entirely in available light depending on what the brief calls for. Sessions take place at your yard, at an event, or wherever makes most sense for what you’re trying to achieve.
Most sessions are within Leicestershire, Rutland, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. I’m based in Leicestershire, between Melton Mowbray and Grantham, which puts the Vale and the Lincolnshire borders within easy reach — further afield by arrangement.
